Metabolic Typing

What you should be eating and why

What is Metabolism?

Your metabolism, simply put, is the way in which your body utilises and converts nutrients into energy. Modern nutritional advice and food industry marketing would have us all believe that what works for one works for everyone else, but there is a simple reason why 'one size fits all' diets do not work... we are all different!

What determines my metabolism?

Your metabolism is determined by your genes. The geographical locations in which your ancestors lived will determine what sort of foods made up the staple diet. Lets take two extremes: If your ancestors were Eskimos the vast majority of their diet would have been protein and rich fats, with very little vegetables or fruit. Eskimos thrive on this high fat high protein type diet and research has shown that a '5 fruit and veg per day' type diet does not work well for an Eskimo and leads to numerous health problems.

Conversely, if your family line originates from hot equatorial regions, vegetable crops would have made up a much larger part of the diet and could have been consumed all year round, so people from these regions would have adapted to a diet higher in fruits and vegetables, lower in rich fatty meats, which were less available.

So what happens if an Eskimo marries an Indian? Well of course you then have a person who requires a mix of those two extremes. This basic example is the foundation of Metabolic Typing. In the West, only about 30% of people have a metabolism that is suited to high fruit and veg (carbohydrate) intake and yet most of us are trying to follow just such a diet, with disastrous consequences.

What are the different types?

There are 3 main Metabolic Types:
1. Protein (fast)
Protein types convert protein and fats into energy very efficiently but don't do well with sugary carbohydrates.
2. Carbohydrate (slow)
Carbohydrate types convert carbohydrates into energy very efficiently but don't do well with rich proteins and fats.
3. Mixed (balanced)
Mixed types enjoy the best of both worlds, converting proteins, fats and carbohydrates very efficiently.

Why is my Metabolic Type important?

Trying to achieve good nutritional health, and all that follows, without knowing your Metabolic Type is like fueling a vehicle without knowing what fuel it takes. Imagine if you put unleaded petrol into a diesel engine, or kerosene into your family 4x4. You may be lucky and get a few miles down the road but at some point the vehicle will either start to perform poorly, or stop working altogether. In the same way, your body needs a certain type of fuel to run properly. Which fuel works for your body may be totally different from what works in someone else's body. What is fuel for one, can quite literally be poison to another. If you don't know your Metabolic Type, everything else is simply guess work.. Call us today to find out about your Metabolic Type.
